About

Before their death on July 28, 2025, Lilly Steffanides collected and preserved the stories of LGBTQI+ service members and veterans through the LILLY LEGAGY History Project. In their final months, Lilly conducted video interviews to document experiences that had been silenced or ignored, ensuring these stories would reach future generations. For Lilly, sharing these narratives was a form of activism—they believed that telling the truth about LGBTQI+ military experiences was crucial for fighting discrimination and inspiring others. The project stands as Lilly’s lasting gift to future generations.

"Every time they try to erase us, it's just gonna make our voices that much louder."

– Lilly Steffanides

"One word from someone's story can save a life, so every last word of someone's story is vital."

– Lilly Steffanides

Testimonials

The message that I hope my story sends is an appreciation for the contributions of LGBTQI+ service members veterans and also specifically of transgender Americans who are now fighting for their right to serve their country, who are in a similar situation as we were.

– Bob Alexander, Lt. Col. (Ret.)

“My story is a story of resilience. Being transgender you have to fight for everything. You have to fight for your rights, your freedom, and being a black transwoman is even harder.”

– Veronika Fimbers

“For years, I didn’t think I was a veteran because I never had that piece of paper… I felt ashamed to wear the uniform. I didn’t think I deserved it. I finally got an Honorable discharge. But it was a fight!”

– Jimmy McConnell
